Coldham&Hartman Architects design Student Housing

At a ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 21st, at the College of the Atlantic, 101-year-old philanthropist Kathryn W. Davis dedicated the new Student Housing named after her.

From the podium, she said, "For me the best part of today is that it brings together a bouquet with most of my loves: my family, my beloved Mount Desert Island, education, students-including international students-and an environmentally friendly project at one of the most environmentally friendly colleges in the world."

Partner Bruce Coldham, AIA discusses the project with Kathryn W. Davis

A week before the first generation of students arrive to occupy the Kathryn W. Davis Student Residence Village, the College celebrated the completion of its new dorms.  Designed to help wean the College off fossil fuels, the Student Housing will derive its heat from a central pellet boiler, and is superinsulated to minimize the amount of heat called for. Composting toilets reduce the buildings' burden on the Maine island's sewer.  On-site monitoring will help students learn the value of conservation.

College president David Hales congratulated the donors, trustees, and the CoA community on their commitment to the project, saying, "The opportunity to do the right thing is tantamount to the responsibility to do the right thing."

Congratulations go out to Rob, Mel, and the whole team at E.L. Shea, whose outstanding work was on display for guests that evening.
